Minimum wage increases to $22.70

On the 8th of February, the government announced that the minimum wage would increase by $1.50/hour to $22.70/hour per the 1st of April 2023, a 7% increase in line with inflation.

A salary review should be done before the 1st of April for those of you employing staff. Check if your team still gets paid above minimum wage at the hours they are contracted for once the minimum wage rate is $22.70/hour.

For years I have run the salaries of all my clients' teams through a spreadsheet showing how many hours they can work at the new minimum wage rate to show how much risk there is of them dipping below minimum wage per hour worked.

For those paying weekly with rosters that cover multiple weeks consider moving to a fortnightly pay cycle. Your team needs to be paid over the minimum wage for every hour worked in a pay period. This probably means topping up their pay every second week. For example, 70 hours a week at $22.70/hour = $1589/week gross. This equates to an annual salary of $82,628!

If you want a copy of the spreadsheet, please email me, and I will send it to you.
