Getting your Christmas payroll right

Make it simple by following a flow chart

Christmas/New Year fall on Sunday and Monday this year. The 25th of December and the 1st of January can move to Tuesday depending on the employee’s roster.

I always make a little flow chart (see above) and work it through that for every Employee for the Public Holidays. Everyone gets 2 Public Holidays (not 3!), but which ones they get is determined by their roster.

For each day there are three options, which depend on whether it is Tuesdayised:

Sunday the 25th (can be Tuesdayised):

1. The Employee was rostered on and worked: The Public Holiday is the Calendar day, they get paid time and a half and they get an Alternative Holiday.

2. The Employee was rostered on and did not work: The Public Holiday is the Calendar day and the Employee gets paid their Relevant Daily Pay for the Public Holiday.

3. The Employee had a rostered day off. The Public Holidays get Tuesdayised and the employees gets no payment for the day.

Monday the 26th you also have three options:

1. The Employee was rostered on and worked: The Public Holiday is the Calendar day and The Employee gets paid 1.5 time and gets an Alternative Holiday.

The Employee was rostered on and did not work: The Public Holiday is the Calendar day and the Employee gets paid their Relevant Daily Pay for the Public Holiday.

The Employee had a rostered day off. The Public Holidays is the Calendar day and the Employee gets no payment for the day.

Tuesday 27th

1. The Employee has already been paid for two Public holidays and it is a normal working day

2. The 25th got Tuesdayised for the Employee:

a. The Employee was rostered on and worked. The Employee gets paid 1.5 time and gets an Alternative Holiday.

b. The Employee was rostered on and did not work: the Employee gets paid their Relevant Daily Pay for the Public Holiday.

c. The Employee had a rostered day off. The Employee gets no payment for the day.
