Protecting What You’re Building – A Timely Reminder
Mar 10, 2026
The storms recently were a good reminder of something many of us quietly push down the list.
After being prompted into action, my own emergency plan is now mostly finished. My updated Will is ready to be signed. My insurance has been reviewed and adjusted to suit where I am now — and where I’m heading.
It was a nudge I needed.
It’s very easy to think, “I’ll get to it later,” while hoping nothing serious happens in the meantime. But storms don’t send a calendar invite. Accidents don’t wait for a quiet week. And businesses don’t pause neatly while we sort things out.
As business owners — especially in the rural sector — we’re very good at focusing on the day-to-day:
-
Cashflow
-
Compliance
-
Staff
-
Growth
But every so often, it’s worth stepping back and asking a few hard questions:
-
If I were suddenly out of action, would someone know what to do?
-
Are key contacts easy to find?
-
Do the right people know where important information is kept?
-
Would my family or business be financially protected?
-
Does my insurance still reflect my current circumstances?
Reviewing the Protection Behind the Business
Recently, I worked alongside reviewed by insurance with a broker. Not only did we change the type of insurance I have and the levels of cover, but we also looked at the premium structure.
Many people don’t realise how much the structure of a policy premium matters. The way premiums are set up can significantly affect affordability in the future — often at the stage of life when cover becomes most important. Getting that structure right early can make a real difference down the track. For some insurances, you can choose level premiums to an age you choose, meaning you are paying a bit more now, but your premium will stay the same until the date agreed, no annual increases until you can no longer afford to pay. Over the agreed term, you can save some serious money!
The broker I talked to also has access to exclusive discounts on life and health insurance for rural customers. Importantly, a broker's service is free to you — they’re paid by insurers, so there’s no cost for advice or reviews. They will tell you which insurers they work with, as they can only offer you advice on those products. They will be registered as financial advisers and will send you that information.
Don’t Leave It for “Later”
Having things written down, signed, reviewed and up to date doesn’t feel urgent… until it suddenly is.
An emergency plan.
A current will.
Insurance that actually matches your reality.
These are not exciting tasks — but they are powerful ones.
If you’d like to sense-check what you currently have in place, contact your own broker, or you’re welcome to let me know, and I can connect you with my broker for a review or second opinion.
It’s simply about making sure the protection behind your business is as solid as the numbers in it — so you can keep building with confidence.
