Why Looking Back Might Be One of the Most Valuable Things You Do in Business

Mar 20, 2026

Over the past week, I was reminded — more than once — how powerful it can be to pause and look back at your journey.

Not in a nostalgic way, and not to get stuck in the past, but to recognise progress.

The first reminder came during a webinar about the Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers Excellence Awards. What stood out to me was that entering the awards is valuable in itself — regardless of the outcome.

Why?

Because it forces you to reflect.

You have to take the time to think about what you’ve achieved over the past year, what has changed, what has improved, and what you’ve learned. And more importantly, you have to put that into words.

That alone is incredibly powerful.

The second reminder came from a catch-up with my mentee through Business Mentors New Zealand. She is at the beginning of her business journey, full of ideas, questions, and decisions to make.

Talking through her plans, the next steps, and potential pitfalls made me realise something quite simple:

I’ve been there before.

And while I don’t have all the answers (no one ever does), I could clearly see how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve changed over the years.

Things that once felt difficult, overwhelming, or uncomfortable are now part of my normal day.

What used to take a lot of thought now happens almost automatically.

And yet, there are always new challenges waiting. New skills to learn. New situations to navigate.

That’s the nature of running a business.

Growth doesn’t stop — it just shifts.

What struck me most is that progress is often so gradual that you don’t notice it day to day. You’re simply moving from one task to the next, solving problems, making decisions, and getting through the week.

But when you take a moment to pause and reflect, you can see the distance you’ve covered.

And that matters.

Because recognising your progress builds confidence.

It reminds you that you can handle what comes next — because you’ve already handled so much before.

So if you haven’t done it in a while, take a moment.

Look back.

Not to stay there — but to appreciate how far you’ve come.
