The Value of Having Us on Your Team

Bookkeeping and payroll services are apparently just the starting point for what we do. 😉

The role also seems to include HR advisor (although anything outside my comfort zone gets referred to the experts), staff recruiter, business advisor, succession-planning sounding board, cashflow coach, emergency-plan encourager, life and relationship coach, and sometimes simply a listening ear.👂

At The Farm Office, we might start a conversation about GST, payroll, or a cashflow forecast, but it rarely stays there.

Somewhere along the way, the conversation often moves to future business plans, family dynamics, succession planning, buying or selling a farm, staff challenges, retirement goals, and major life events.

Recently, I was talking to a client about salaries, the budget, and a cashflow forecast for the coming season when the conversation drifted into the family conflict that was affecting the business.

I said, "That sounds like something a cashflow forecast alone won't solve. What outcome do you want, and what outcome do the other parties want?"

There was a pause before they replied, "That's exactly why I wanted to talk to you. I needed someone to reality-check our very different views about the ownership and future of the business. Who is right or wrong, or is the answer somewhere in the middle?"

Moments like that remind me that farmers don't just need reports completed and payroll processed on time. 📊 They need someone who understands their business, has some life experience, listens without judgement, and helps them think things through.

Being a sounding board for someone who runs a business on their own, or alongside family members, can be incredibly valuable. Often, simply putting a problem into words helps bring clarity. Sometimes a few questions are all it takes for someone to see their options more clearly and identify the next step forward. 💡

After working alongside farming families for more than 20 years, I've learned that trusted relationships are built on far more than numbers.
